Sound to Screen: A Music Video Built Entirely in Post

Client

Independent Artist

Brief

An independent musician arrived with a finished song and nothing else: no footage, no b-roll, no visual concept, and a complete music video still to build.

Background

Releasing a track without a video means competing on a visual platform with nothing to show. A traditional shoot was out of reach on both budget and timeline, so the entire video had to be constructed in post.

The Brand

We treated the track itself as the brief, letting the tempo, mood, and lyrics dictate every footage choice and cut, so the finished video feels authored rather than assembled.

A track and nothing else

The Starting Point

The client came to us with one asset: a finished, mixed audio track. There was no footage to edit, no shoot planned, and no storyboard. Just the song and a release to hit.

For a music release that's the hard version of the problem. The track has to carry, but YouTube is a visual platform, and audio over a static cover image doesn't hold anyone past the first chorus. The entire video had to be built from scratch, in post.

Curating footage to match the track

Sourcing the Visual

We started by breaking the song down: tempo, dynamics, and the emotional arc from verse to chorus. That became the basis for the visual language. From there we curated stock footage that matched the mood and meaning of each passage, favouring a consistent palette and grain so clips from separate sources would read as one film.

Every clip was then cut against the rhythm. Transitions land on the beat, shot lengths tighten as the track builds, and the imagery breathes where the mix does. That is what separates a deliberate music video from a slideshow set to sound.

Making the words part of the frame

Lyric Typography

With the footage locked, we layered in synced lyric typography, timed line by line so the words land with the vocal, never ahead of it or trailing behind.

The type was treated as a design element rather than a subtitle track: weight, placement, and motion were composed against each shot so the lyrics sit inside the frame instead of on top of it. The practical payoff is retention: viewers who can follow the words stay through the full runtime, and lyric-led videos pick up the searches people actually make for a song.

Release-ready, no shoot required

The Deliverable

The result is a complete, release-ready music video produced entirely in post, with no shoot days, no location costs, and no crew. It gave the artist a platform-native visual to launch with, and a repeatable pipeline for turning any future track into a finished video.

The client supplied only the audio track. Every frame here was sourced, cut to the rhythm, and lyric-synced by Stravix.
